The preparation for Science and Technology section is quite different. First things first, finding the right study material is still a problem. Piling up a huge stock of books and resources available in the market and cramming them up is NOT a solution .

For scoring well in Science and Technology section of IAS Prelims 2016, you would first need to analyse the kind of questions that UPSC asks. Mostly, all of the questions from Science and Technology section are analytical/conceptual in nature. A lot of them hold relevance because of the events going on around us.

So, current affairs across the world goes in-sync with your conceptual knowledge. All you need here is the right approach.

So what is the correct approach?

We suggest you to strengthen your basics first .

Take up NCERT textbooks and go through them. Focus on the science behind various natural phenomenon. This would make your learning more fun as well.
Go through previously asked questions from the Science & Technology section and understand which topics are more relevant and frequently asked.
Prioritise your study plan based on that.

While you are preparing, make sure you stick to the basics only. If you don’t understand concepts well enough from NCERTs, you may look it up on the internet.

But do not spend too much time understanding the concepts in great details. Remember, you don’t need to hold a doctorate before writing the exam. You have various other sections to cover as well. So, do NOT waste your time.

Keep a tab of what is happening in India & around the World
If you analyse previous years’ question papers thoroughly, and research them on google, you’d see that those questions were asked simply because it was in the news. For instance, there were questions on Higgs Boson, Graphene, Neutrino’s.

A good way to start is to simply look at the list of Nobel Prize winners and look up their area of work. You may get questions simply based on that.

Focus on what is happening in India that is relevant to the field of Science and Technology. Follow ISRO, DRDO, Ministry of Science & Technology and what they do. The best way to do that is to religiously follow Science & Technology section of ‘The Hindu’. While you are at it, just remember that you don’t have to follow only the facts & events. Look for the issues they are dealing with, problems they faced, the relevance of breakthroughs made. If you don’t understand anything, there is always INTERNET.

Just remember that you don’t have to go in great details.

Practice & Evaluate

Like always, we can’t undermine the importance of practising and evaluating yourself. Pick up a decent test series and keep practising. You may come across new questions that you might have overlooked while preparing. Also, it minimises your chances of making silly mistakes in the actual exam.

The preparation of Science & Technology thus involves a 3-pronged strategy.

Step 1: Building Your Basics

Step 2: Interlinking your understanding to events around the world

Step 3: Evaluating yourself

NOTE: Those with Non Science background have no reason to be scared of Science & Technology Section. You can always take the help of Internet, your own friends but make sure that it is very essential to make concise notes in your own language.
